Song Lyrics

I am a kite
I have no wings and yet I fly
You hold the string for me
As I float on high

I am a kite
Paper and string, a scrap of wood
The wind will sing to me
I am a bird

See how I ride
A butterfly with wings spread wide
I'm but a child's plaything
You give me life

Tied to your hand
Your spirit with me rides
I look down on where you stand
Lift you up to my side

I am a kite
A bright balloon with a wayward tail
Race to the moon
On breaths of moving sky I sail

I am a kite
I have no wings and yet I fly
You hold the string for me
As I float on high

Song Notes

Actually, this song has a kind of strange origin. I was ticked off at someone, and kind of exploded at him. As I was trying to return to a peaceful state, I got the idea for “I am a kite..”. I was driving - generally a good songwriting situation for me - and I think that “popping the cork” was just what I needed to let that song come out. “I Am a Kite” sat for a year after that, as all the music I came up with sounded too corny. Then one day as I sat outside in the sun, some fitting music came to mind and I allowed it to reshape the lyrics a little, resulting in the song as it was recorded here.

Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
