Song Lyrics |

|
These are not easy words to write
A letter came for me last night
For once I'm gonna do it right
And answer from the gut
Oh, I know, you're such a humble guy
Can't possibly imagine why
I wasn't very sweet to you
When we last met
No, I could not find it in myself
To bend to your will
It seems you cannot deal with anyone
Not under your spell
And you don't think you need to change
That's the way I heard you tell it
Still, I wish you well.. I wish you well
Even as we move apart
I want to keep an open heart
You still want the upper hand
You want me to be wrong
I've tried my best to muddle through
But all the rules were made by you
Even if I wanted to, I could not go along
No, I could not play the game
That you were asking me to
I could not redefine myself
Just to be pleasing to you
And if you think that's how it's supposed to be
There's not much I can do
Still, I wish you well.. I wish you well
This new love that you've come to find
She understands, she's not so blind
Forgive me if I'm not inclined
To feel any deep regrets
So you've found someone you can convince
That you can be a charming prince
If she will be the princess
Oh, blissful ignorance
And so, for now you think
You've got it all under control
As long as she will only look at you
Through rosy spectacles
And let you be the one whose whims
And wishes always overrule
You can go to hell.. I wish you well
These are not easy words to hear
I've seen the angry mask of fear
Arise each time I've gotten near
To reaching you inside
All these years you've been on hold
Running scared, running hot and cold
Surrender.. and let love be your guide
No, I will not be silent
If indeed I am a friend,
I will not say just what you want to hear
I've no need to pretend
And even if it means you're never
Gonna talk to me again
Still, I wish you well.. I wish you well

Song Notes |
|
| If any ex-boyfriends think this song could be for you, let me put your mind at ease. I could never be so cool and detached about the break-up of a real relationship. “I Wish You Well” was inspired by a letter received at the end of a brief entanglement, one that fortunately never got off the ground. I sent the man in question the lyrics and he never did speak to me again. When I looked back on his letter to me, I discovered that he himself had supplied the “I wish you well” hook. Wow! Thanks, guy whose name I won’t mention. |
