Mother: Son can we go to the park?
Son: Not now.
Mother: Can we touch and feel the spark?
Son: No, not now.
Mother: But when son can we do these things?
Where can we go to feel these things?
I want to know, I want to know.
Mother: Son can we go build a bridge?
Son: Not now.
Mother: Can we shop and fill the ‘fridge?
Son: No not now.
Mother: I want to know when will there be
A time for us in harmony.
Son: I do not know, I just don’t know.
If I knew the answers to these questions
I could answer all your questions Now
I’d answer now
If I knew the path that I must follow
Knew the rivers, streams and hollows
I would say, I’d really say.
Mother: Son can we go to the park?
Son: No not now, no not now.
Mother: Can we touch and feel the spark?
Son: Not now, now, now, now.
I need to run, I need to wander
Need to hide and need to squander
All my time, just for the moment
If you give me space to find my center
Someday soon you may remember
It’s my life, it’s not your own
If you give me space to find my reason
I will give in time and season
To your life, and feel your love
If you give me space to find my center
Someday soon you may remember
It’s my life, it’s not your own.

Song Notes |

Not Now is a song that was written on Mother’s Day, 1998. The story is a dialogue between a mother and her son, and is the observation of the father. The history is about a mother who has raised a seventeen-year-old son, and has given him all the love, guidance, nurturance and support that she could for all of his life. The son, a brilliant child, had not yet matured, was very self-centered and gave back nothing.
A week prior to this particular Mother’s Day, the Father had spoken to the child and said, “you know son, Mother’s Day is coming soon. What have you planned to do for Mom?” and the child has responded, “give me ten dollars and I will buy her a five dollar gift”. The Father told him that was not acceptable, and that the son could even make her a card, or do something, anything, to give to his mother. The son’s response to him, and to his mother was always, “not now”, that he was too busy, too self-involved, too self-focused. It was never the right time for him to give.
On the morning of Mother’s Day, the Father and his daughter got up early to give the Mother breakfast in bed and give her gifts, love and praise. When the son was awoken to participate and asked to get up and join them, his response was “not now”, as he rolled over in bed and went back to sleep. Seeing the tears in Mother’s eyes, with all his good intentions, father was helpless to give his wife the one thing she wanted on Mother’s day, namely love from her son. All Father could do that day, to try and help Mother heal and recover from her intense pain was to write this song.
