Notes
The Elegant Tern is a beautiful, graceful bird found along California’s coast, offshore islands, bays and lagoons. It is known for its slender appearance and its light, graceful flight.
Elegant terns are loyal to one mate, sometimes separated by hundreds of miles but always returning to the same breeding grounds to find their mate.
A “Species of Special Concern” in California, the Elegant Tern (Sterna elegans) was once considered quite rare but has recovered well.
Heartfelt thanks go to John Renbourn for his continuing inspiration, helpful insights, and generosity of spirit.
Many, many thanks to Alex de Grassi for all the wonderful ideas and critiques that have added so much sparkle and depth to these pieces.
For helping to keep everything in proper perspective, thank you to Buddhist mentors and friends Shifu (Master Hua), Ajahn Amaro, Heng Sure, Sarah Babcock, Estee Cheng, Prajna Murdaya, Rinaldi Wibowo, Tina Yang, and the many other supportive members of the Sangha.
For your encouragement and support in so many different ways, thank you to Grandma (as always), Father, Bonnie Church, Alison de Grassi, Miles and Daisy, Dave Hannaford, Tom Nunamaker, Carrie Stimson, and the kind folks at the Mendocino Book Company and The Gallery Bookshop.
When You Know for Yourselves
Do not accept anything on mere hearsay, thinking that we have heard it for a long time.
Do not accept anything based on mere tradition, thinking that it has thus been handed down for many generations.
Do not accept anything on account of mere rumors, believing what
others say, without thorough investigation.
Do not accept anything just because it is in accord with your scriptures.
Do not accept anything by mere supposition.
Do not accept anything on the basis of merely considering the reasons.
Do not accept anything because it agrees with your preconceived notions.
Do not accept anything merely because it seems acceptable.
Do not accept anything, thinking, the Monk, Teacher, Holy man, Buddha, etc. is respected by us.
But, when you know for yourselves, these things are immoral, these things are blameworthy, these things are censored by the wise; these things, when performed and undertaken, conduce to ruin and sorrow – then indeed do you reject them.
When you know for yourselves, these things are moral, these things are blameless, these things are praised by the wise; these things, when performed and undertaken, conduce to well-being and happiness, then do you believe and live accordingly.
- Buddha’s advice to the Kalamas on seeking truth
(The Kalama Sutra)
Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
