Song Lyrics |

Underneath a cloud of pain
Falls a shower of gentle rain
Though your soul is parched and broken
Still there's something to be gained
Underneath a cloud of pain
1.Tears flow
I shut my eyes and let the wind blow
Our angry words were hung like pictures on the wall
They echoed down the hall
I could not find a reason to go on
But after counting every tear
My eyes began to clear
And there she stood, the one who loves me
Only hoping I could hear
After counting every tear
2. 'Polly!'
I heard my daughter calling, 'Polly!'
The silence answering was crueler than the cold
She would not be consoled
But still she lit a candle for her friend
And as she gazed into the flame
I could see her hope betray her
Every heart she touched fell open
Though my own was choked with blame
As she gazed into the flame
3.Falling
The tower was spewing flames and falling
Debris and bodies rained in torrents all around
The thunder shook the ground
A Child of Islam stumbled to his knees
And, though destruction ruled the skies
There was one who heard his cries
A Jew reached down to help the Muslim
Cheat the Reaper of his prize
Though destruction ruled the skies
(Heartbreak, sorrow, leave tomorrow)
Anguish shadows my soul as I sleep
Begging me for a swallow so deep
On the window pane
Can you hear the rain?
Underneath a cloud of pain
Falls a shower of gentle rain
Cool and clear to wash the wounds from
Things we struggle to explain
Underneath a cloud of pain

Song Notes |
|
| 'The events in this song are true. The concept of this song was fixed when the light finally came on, some time after an argument with my partner, Kate. Hence, the first verse. The second verse refers to our young daughter's response upon learning that her good friend had been murdered. The last verse recalls an interaction between two people during the destruction of WTC. The song took shape over a year, but my kids' favorite part is the 'slidy' guitar ditty near the end, and that was written over 20 years ago, in Oakland. I am particularly grateful to Kate Sholl, who postponed some of her own artistic endeavors while offering me her vocal gifts, discerning ear, harmonic ideas, encouragement, and companionship. The completion of this recording would not have been possible without her doing double-time in family responsibilities while I obsessed over lyrics and chords. I am especially grateful that she was still there when the light finally came on.' |
