Liner Notes

Quintana

Quintana evolved from a trip to the Yucatan Peninsula about ten years ago. I began composing a piece there feeling the intense pulse of the jungle night. Strumming the guitar recently, I realized I was playing the refrain from this barely remembered piece. Time dissolved. I was instantly transported to the mysterious land of the Mayas.

River

I have always loved the koto, a thirteen stringed traditional Japanese instrument. I recently found the beautiful antique played here in a small shop in Japantown, San Francisco. This melody uses a traditional tuning which suggests a river’s flow.

Lucia’s Walk

A trip to the ocean remembering
Caribbean sands
Her fluid entrancing walk

Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
