Phyllis Addison is a versatile vocalist, keyboardist and songwriter, with classical Western and Eastern music training and extensive performance experience in rock, reggae and jazz bands. She has played professionally throughout the U.S. including Hawaii, has written music for film and video and has been featured on domestic and European radio. A graduate of the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music, and a former student of Pandit Pran Nath and Ali Akbar Khan, she is also a published composer. Phyllis is a joyful performer, who's dance training is evident in her performances. Her personal, innovative, songwriting style combines the elements of her training into an energetic experience of Indian, African, pop, jazz and house music, which invokes the spiritual realm.
On her more serious side, Phyllis is a composer of contemporary classical music. Her woodwind quintet, "The Room," received a Pacific Composers Forum award in 1990 and was published by the Hildegard Publishing Company in 1995. Her ensemble compositions have been performed by the Women's Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet, the Pacifica Chamber Players and various quintets and choirs around the country. She is the author and composer of a rock musical "The Mythical Earth," which brings to life an ancient/future Matriarchy and is a founding member of the Women Artists Group in LA. She is a featured vocalist on "The Psalms of Ra" by Jim Berenholz where she performed with flutist Viviana Guzman, guitarist Brian Gore, clarinetist Paul McCandless and vocalists Joey Blake and Melanie DeMoore. Phyllis has studied with such luminary composers as Anthony Payne, Terry Riley and Lou Harrison and is a grant recipient of Meet the Composer.
