refers to a musical genre/style, as well specific lyrical content more focused on a spiritual or religious nature. There are some distinct Gospel subgenres/styles including Southern Gospel, Black Gospel, and Traditional Gospel. Black Gospel and Southern Gospel are differentiated by specific riffs, licks, chord progressions, and rhythmic syncopation. This is often best featured by a piano, organ, or guitar style of playing and is often performed in a 9/8 or 12/8 time signature. Traditional Gospel is often more a lyrical content category and encompasses multiple genre influences including Bluegrass, Country, Pop, R & B, Easy Listening, Soft Rock etc. There are also multiple combinations of genres with the Gospel designation including Country Gospel, R & B Gospel, and Contemporary Christian Gospel.
